Group music therapy improves social interaction and group cooperation skills

Date

This music therapy program is designed to enhance participants' self-expression skills, helping them better understand and express their emotions, relieve stress, and enhance their ability to interact socially and work in groups.

Music therapist Virgina Kwok recently went to La Salle Secondary School in New Territories to provide students from Form 1 to Form 3. Through music therapy, she improved the participants' self-expression ability; helped them effectively express their emotions and stress; and enhanced their social interaction and group cooperation abilities.

Musical Expression and Creation:

  • Participants are encouraged to express their emotions and feelings through music, such as by playing an instrument, singing or composing musical compositions.
  • Provide a variety of musical instruments and musical materials to allow participants to find ways of self-expression in music.
  • Guide participants to participate in music creation activities and encourage them to create their own musical works.

Express emotions and stress:

  • Through music, participants can help release stress and eliminate negative emotions.
  • Using musical elements such as rhythm, melody and harmony, participants are led to experience changes and transformations of emotions.
  • Provide a safe and supportive environment for participants to express their innermost emotions in music.

Social interaction and group cooperation:

  • Develop participants’ social interaction and collaboration skills through activities such as music ensembles and choruses.
  • Participants are encouraged to support, collaborate and communicate with each other within the musical community.
  • Arrange group activities and music games for participants to participate together and learn teamwork.

Virginia works with school teachers and counselors to ensure treatment programs are consistent with school educational goals. This music therapy program is designed to enhance participants' self-expression skills, helping them better understand and express their emotions, relieve stress, and enhance their ability to interact socially and work in groups. We hope to provide a positive music experience for students of La Salle Secondary School in New Territories and promote their overall development and mental health.
